I took a little chip shot at the English rioters yesterday. Max Hastings takes out the wood today in The Mail Online. I can’t remember the last time I read such a scathing piece. It steams and spits about lost English youth. Hasting’s column may be talked about for years. It is a well-written, visceral rant. Caution: It will arouse strong reaction one way or the other.

He hits the nail on the head. Note that the direction London has taken has happened mostly in the past 20 years. Though I am no fan of Rudy – one has to respect his NO TOLERANCE policies (AMF Squeegee Boys) that led to NYC becoming a much, much safer place than London. Secondly, the tolerance of what would be considered public drunkeness or vagrancy on US streets is frankly sickening in the UK.
London is much MUCH safer than New York you idiot, it has less than half its murder rate and it’s the same size. Thinking a shithole like NYC is safer shows how stupid you really are.
“the tolerance of what would be considered public drunkeness or vagrancy on US streets is frankly sickening in the UK.”
Yet it’s far worse in the US? Dumb cunt
On reflection, I think you use the words “scathing” and “excoriating” entirely too much. Besides the fact that the adjective is the last refuge of weak writing, these words are emblematic of what ails humanity as a whole and the American body politic in particular. What we need is fewer scathing attacks and more honest reflection about how to address our many problems. Barack Obama is a decent man doing the hardest job in the world at the worst possible moment and every time I open your blog you’re gleefully piping about some excoriating piece that tells us all what a pathetic idiot the man is. Sigh. As for the piece of tripe that you link to in this post, I find it hard to believe that someone who bemoans the nanny state as much as you do would proudly link to an article that ends with this nonsense: “Unless or until those who run Britain introduce incentives for decency and impose penalties for bestiality which are today entirely lacking…”
I’ll try to intersperse “scorching” from time to time.
The piece below, I believe, summarizes the issue as well as anything I have read. Please note that it comes from The Guardian. The riots are a cultural problem and a serious one at that. Politics have little to do with it.

PS Scathing seems to be pefectly suitable (as does excoriate). These are not personal terms so I am not sure what the issue is. President Obama may be decent but he is not immune from criticism. No one forced him to run. As Harry Truman said, “If you can’t stand the heat…”
