C’est de la Politique Américaine

And, speaking of Iowa…

Things are getting pretty low-brow in the Hawkeye state. Here is an example of the type of ad now running, this one from a “progressive” group calling itself Americanlp.org. Its message? If Mitt Romney speaks French, he must be a liberal. (Again, this ad purportedly is coming from a left-wing Super PAC.)

Expect more of these. AmericanLP has launched a contest for smear-job ads attacking the French-speaking Republican front runner. C’est de la politique.

P.S. The official languages of the Olympics are French and English.  Kind of nice that Mr. Romney, chairman of The Salt Lake City Games, could speak both. I’m going to go out on a limb and call that a plus.

Thanks for showing our ad, but one clarification. Our message isn’t that Romney is a liberal because he speaks French. Our message is that Romney is smart because he speaks French. And our assumption is that a party that mocked John Kerry for speaking French and swarms toward people like Herman Cain has become the “Stupid Party,” therefore Romney looking smart will hurt him. The second message we had is that Romney has a long list of liberal positions and statements on the record and that Republicans should know that and then vote against him for that reason as well.

What’s interesting is that this group is concerned enough to spend resources on a Republican primary. One thing I would caution is that the voters aren’t stupid, and strategies that assume that generally backfire.
